Walter Herrmann started playing basketball professionally in 1996 and he is still active in it. He started playing professionally after joining Olimpia de Venado Tuerto in 1996 in the Argentine League. In 2000, he moved to the Argentine club Atenas Cordoba where he was named the MVP of the Argentine League Finals in 2002.
Walter Herrmann joined Spanish ACB League club Baloncesto Fuenlabrada for the 2002-03 season and then joined Unicaja Málaga.
Walter signed a 4-year contract worth 5.05 million euros with Saski Baskonia but soon left the team to join NBA. He signed a one-year contract worth $1.8 million with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2006. In March 2007, he has won the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month Award.
On 14 December 2007, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Nazr Mohammed. On 2 August 2008, he signed a contract extension for one year with the Pistons.
