Susan Stroman was born on the 17th of October 1954 in Wilmington, Delaware.

Her father, Charles Harry Stroman is of is French ethnicity. Her mother, Frances Nolan is of Irish ethnicity. Charles used to be a salesman by profession.

Early Life 

From her childhood, she was into music as her father used to play the piano. Moving forward, she found herself through dancing.

At the age of 5, Susan Stroman joined the Academy of the Dance in Wilmington.

Under the dancing specialist James Jamieson, she trained in different forms of dancing including Jazz, Tap, and Ballet.

Stroman’s Education

In 1976, she graduated from the University of Delaware with Honors in English.

Later, in 2005, the University awarded her Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

During her University days, she joined the local theatres in Delaware and Philadelphia.

Choreographer

After graduating from University, Susan Stroman devoted herself to the theater.

She moved to New York City. Professionally, the artist started her career through Goodspeed Opera House with the play Hit the Deck.

Later, in 1979, Susan Stroman made her Broadway debut with the musical play, Whoopee! After that, she explored the choreographer as her career option.

Apart from that, Stroman started making an appearance in the commercials too.

In 1987, she made her Off-Broadway debut with Flora the Red Menace as a choreographer.

Her work in the play amazed the theater producer and director, Hal Prince. Prince hired the dance sequences for the play, Don Giovanni.

Subsequently, Susan Stroman choreographed the plays including Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hal, And the World Goes ‘Round, and Crazy for You.

For the play Crazy for You, she earned her first Tony Awards as Best Choreographer.

Director

Moving forward, she expanded her career as a director. Her first play as a director was the 2000 revival of The Music Man.

 After that, in 1999, she directed and choreographed the dance play, Contact.

Later, she directed the plays including Thou Shalt Not and The Frogs in Lincoln Center Theater.

In 2001, Susan Stroman directed the play, The Producers. As of now, she has directed more than 20 plays.

Apart from the theater plays, she directed the movies including 2005-The Producers and 2020- Young Frankenstein Live!
