After university graduation, Richard Burr began his career as a sales manager for Carswell Distributing Company. He worked for 17 years there.

He began his political career in the early 1990s. Burr ran against incumbent Democratic Representative Stephen L. Neal in 1992. Ironically, he lost the election.  After that, he ran again in 1994 and was elected to Congress during a landslide year for Republicans.

In 1997, Burr authored the FDA Modernization Act. At the same time, he helped to create the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

In 2004, he won the Republican at the U.S. Senate United States Senate election in North Carolina, 2004. He again won the United States Senate election in North Carolina in 2010.

Richard won the United States Senate election in North Carolina for the third time in 2016. He defeated Democratic Deborah K. Ross in the November 2016 general election.

Burr is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Burr successfully represented North Carolina’s 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2005.

In addition to politics, Richard Burr also serves as a board member of Brenner Children’s Hospital. He is also a board member of the West Point Board of Visitors.
