Joan Mir acquired his first motorcycle, a Polini when he was six years old. The next year, he purchased a Honda QR, which marked the beginning of his motorcycle racing career.

He raced in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2013 and 2014.Jorge Martn was the only guy to beat him in 2014.

Mir competed in his maiden Grand Prix with Leopard Racing in 2015 at Phillip Island.  Joan remained with Leopard Racing in 2017 and dominated the Moto3 class, with 10 victories and 13 podiums in 18 races.
