She was the youngest of four daughters born to Mary Lee Rafferty and Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr. Her mother is the chairman of the English Department at Convert of the Sacred Heart school and her father worked in finance and oil painting for cultivating her passion for the arts.
Sarah was raised with her three sisters Maura Rafferty, Ann Rafferty, and Constance Rafferty. She attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated in 1989.
