In 2002, she ran the election for Illinois state representative. In the election, she defeated the Republican Kitty Watson with a vote difference of 62%.

Two years later, Robin Kelly re-elected for the post defeating Republican Jack Mclnerney with a vote difference of 66%. In 2006, she got re-elected without any opposition. The following year, she became the chief of staff to Illinois Treasurer, Alexia Giannoulias.

In 2010, she became Illinois Treasurer defeating Justin Oberman. Moving forward, in 2013, she ran for the 2013 Illinois’s 2nd congressional district special election. In the election, she won with vote of 53.27%.

The same year, she stood up in the general election for the district. She won the election with 70.72%. After that, she continuously won the election for the district with vote 78.49%, 79.81%, and 82.05% in 2014, 2016, and 2018 respectively.

Currently, she is serving as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Also, she serves on the Health, Energy, and Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee.
