Nell Carter was born as Nell Ruth Hardy on September 13, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, the United States. She was born as one of nine children to Horace Hardy and Edna Mae Hardy. Moreover, she was just two years old when her dad was electrocuted when he stepped on a live power line.
She started singing on a local gospel radio show and was also a member of the church choir as a child. When she turned fifteen she started performing with the Renaissance Ensemble that played at area coffee houses and gay bars. She later moved to New York and started singing in coffee shops until she got her first role on Broadway in 1971.

Carter started her Broadway debut in 1971 rock opera Soon. She became the Music Director for the `1974 Westbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective’s production of “What Time of Night It Is“. Nell passed away on January 23, 2003, at her house in Beverly Hills. As per reports, she died due to arteriosclerotic heart disease with diabetes, a contributing condition. She died at the age of 54. She was buried at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
