After his senior year in college as a basketball player, he was drafted with the first pick in the 1998 draft by L.A. Clippers. This is where his professional career as a basketball player started. In the 1998-99 season, he signed for an Italian team called Kinder Bologna.
Michael Olowokandi played three games there and averaged 4.7 points per game with 5.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. He also played 3 games for Bologna in the FIBA EuroLeague and averaged 10.7 points with 6 rebounds per game.
After eventually getting his chance to play for the Clippers, he played there for five seasons. Injuries limited his time in the Timberwolves as he stayed sidelines for the most part of the season and was very inconsistent in his performances.
