Matthew grew up playing minor hockey in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA)’s Central Ontario Wolves. He also spent his early hockey years playing for his hometown Haliburton Huskies before moving up to the AAA level. After the 2006–07 season with the Wolves, Brampton Battalion selected him in the first round of the 2007 OHL Priority Selection. Entering the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, NHL Central Scouting Bureau named him second overall among North American skaters.
Matthew was selected third overall by Colorado Avalanche in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He got his first career NHL point in his Avalanche debut on October 1, 2009, against the San Jose Sharks. Since then, he plays for the Colorado Avalanche. He agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract extension with the club on July 18, 2013. He then became the alternate captain of the team on October 13, 2016. With the club, he has an annual salary of 6 million dollars.
Duchene made his international debut at the 2008 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and won the gold medal. The same year, he was named to Canada’s under-18 team for the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships. After that, he was selected as captain at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August. Matthew won gold medals in both tournaments. He has represented Team Canada in other several tournaments.
