James Ennis started playing basketball in 2013. He started playing basketball professionally after being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2013 NBA draft.
He was immediately traded to the Miami Heat on the same draft night. James joined the Heat and played for the team in the 2013 NBA Summer League.
Heat wanted him to play from their NBA Development League affiliate team, Sioux Falls Skyforce but were unable to sign him due to salary cap restrictions. He decided to play overseas and support his family.

On 15 July 2014, Ennis signed a multi-year contract with the Miami Heat and played in the 2021 NBA Summer League. He made a debut for team Heat in a winning match against Washington Wizards on 29 October 2014.
On 10 November 2015, he was traded to Memphis Grizzlies and assigned to the Iowa Energy of Grizzlies affiliate D-League. In March 2016, he was released from the team and again acquired by Iowa Energy on 6 March 2016.
