Jacob Markstrom began his hockey career by playing for the Brynäs IF junior team. On May 12, 2008, he signed two years contract with Brynäs IF Senior team.
During that time, he performed very well in the Swedish Hockey League, and World Junior tournaments and even played internationally from Sweden in the Under 18.
The following month he was selected for Florida Panthers in the 2008 NHL. He also became the youngest goaltender to ever play for the Panthers.
Jacob Markstrom also played for Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. During the first season of AHL, he injured his knee. He came back after the surgery in South Florida.
On October 22, 2011, Jacob Markstrom won his first NHL when he played in the third period against the New York Islanders and made 18 saves on 18 shots.
On 4 March 2014, he was traded by the Panthers, along with forwarding Shawn Matthias, to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Roberto Luongo and Steven Anthony, where he served as Vancouver’s backup behind fellow Swede Eddie Lack. Later, the contract was extended to a two-year one-way with the Vancouver Canucks on 29 June 2015.
In the 2014–15 season, Markström got his first and only win when he made 26 saves on 27 shots on 22 March 2015, when the Canucks beat the Arizona Coyotes by 3–1.
On 7 July 2016, Jacob Markstrom re-signed a three years extension contract with the Canucks. He recorded his first NHL shutout against Carolina Hurricanes in a 3-0 win on 5 December 2017.
