Earlier, David was interested in sports and baseball from an early age. During high school, he played baseball for four years.

He was a prominent member of a state championship team and was a two-time all-state selection.

This sportsman was also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and a Member of the National Honor Society. In the class of 1993, he was voted ‘Most Helpful’ player.

During the University, he was a walk-on player for coach Joe Arnold on Florida Gators Baseball Team, and later, received an athletics scholarship.

In 2007, Eckstein was enlisted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a ‘Gator Great’. Earlier, in the 1997 amateur draft, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round.
