Annette Hanshaw was an American Jazz Age singer. She was one of the most popular radio stars of the 1930s. Over four million of her records had been sold by 1934.

In a ten-year recording career, she recorded about 250 sides. In a 1934 poll conducted by Radio Stars magazine, she received the title of the best female popular singer.

Second place went to Ethel Shutta, third place went to Ruth Etting, and fourth place went to Kate Smith.

Her birth name was Catherine Annette Hanshaw. She was born on October 18, 1901, and died on March 13, 1985. She was born in Manhattan, New York City, New York, to Frank Wayne Hanshaw (father) and Mary Gertrude McCoy (mother) in their residence in Manhattan.

She had two brothers, George and Frank. Her father loved show business and music; he ran away to join the circus, but he returned. She had an aunt Nellie McCoy and Bob “Uke” Hanshaw was a vaudeville performer.

Annette sang for guests at hotels owned by her father and demoed sheet music at her family’s music shop, The Melody Shop, in Mount Kisco, New York.

Annette Hanshaw aspired to be a portrait painter, studying at the National School of Design for a year. Her professional music career started when she was paid to sing for society and birthday parties.

Annette Hanshaw played piano and ukulele, occasionally accompanying herself on these instruments on her recordings.

On her recordings, in addition to her name, Annette Hanshaw used aliases, including Miss Annette, Ethel Bingham, Dot Dare, Gay Ellis, Marion Lee, Leila Sanford, Janet Shaw, and Patsy Young.

Annette Hanshaw also recorded for the American Record labels Pathe, Pathe Actuelle, Perfect, Apex, Columbia, OKeh, Harmony, Velvet Tone, Diva, Clarion, Odeon, ARC, Banner, Conqueror, Melotone, Oriole, Romeo, Broadway, and Vocalion.

Her records were released on British labels Parlophone, Ariel, Panachord, Decca, Mayfair, Key, and Edison Bell Winner. Annette Hanshaw’s most of her records end with her saying “That’s all”.

Annette Hanshaw died due to Cancer on March 13, 1985, in New York City.
